US-Pak partnership crucial for peace in Afghanistan: Dr. Marvin

 

 

ISLAMABAD : Dr. Marvin G, Weinbum of the United States has said that US-Pakistan partnership is very important to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan.

He said we have to work together successful to overcome the problems being confronted to the two countries and without Pakistan role US cannot achieve its objective of maintaining peace in the region.

This he said while taking part in a public dialogue on Challenges in US-Pakistan Relations organized by Institute of Strategic Studies here on Wednesday.
He admitted that there is frustration in the United States about the stability in Afghanistan and said that we have no design to prolong its stay. He said we would not leave the region unless some political arrangements is made in Afghanistan.

He urged the need for forging better relationship between the two countries to meet the current challenges and bring stability in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said both the countries know about the fundamentals of their relations. He said we have the understanding that Pakistan is cooperating with USA which is also in its own interest . He said Pakistan is our ally in the war against terrorism.

Answering questions, Dr. Marvin said that Taliban have lot confidence in the international community and within the Afghan government and majority of Afghan people are of the view that US should not leave that country at this stage.

He said NATO forces are not only fighting terrorism, but the insurgency and sincere dialogue process is vital to resolve the Afghan issue. He said Al-Qaeda is suffering defeat in Afghanistan and also in the Middle East by the power of the people. He said success of Taliban in Afghan would also create instability in Afghanistan and would cast serious consequences in Pakistan.

To a question regarding US agreement with India on transferring civilian nuclear technology, he said we have two separate policies about the Pakistan and India. Regarding peoples movement in the Middle East, he said it is an indigenous movement and people want to bring change, but we have vital interest with the leadership of Bahrain.

Chairman ISS Tanvir Ahmad Khan said that there were always ups and downs in Pakistan-US relations. He said for the last two years both the countries claim to have strategic relationships. He said the relations between the two countries are indispensable and vital, but they are under stress.

He also explained the disappointment of the people of Pakistan on the events like Raymond Davis and the drone attacks in the border areas of Pakistan. He said threatening and cohesive policy of the United States towards Pakistan is creating negative image among the people.
He said the people of Pakistan particularly KPK and the armed forces have rendered innumerable sacrifices which should be recognized by the United States.
